St Nicholas of Tolentino: worship space for a mission to the inner city

The remodelling and extension to the 1840’s Church of St Nicholas of Tolentino on the eastern edge of Bristol’s historic city centre. The interior retains the character of the original building with a central space, incorporating a sunken baptismal pool, and new seating on either side.

We worked closely with the Parish to determine their requirements. Our innovative design created a new parish hall within the building, and a new mezzanine floor replacing the old organ loft, providing extra space. The traditional orientation of the plan was reversed to have the entrance on the eastern end, with the sanctuary in the centre of the congregation. A side wing provides meeting rooms opening directly into the worship area, providing overflow space when necessary.

Externally, the side wing echos the form and materials of the Victorian building, and provides a new facade to Lawfords Gate.

The project was funded by the sale of surplus land for housing - a project which we undertook in the years after the work to the church building.
