Bankside: housing on urban brownfield site

A largely residential development on a brownfield site off Coronation Road, a thoroughfare which defines the northern edge of south Bristol. Six new apartment buildings are arranged to create two small courtyards. level changes across the site mean that there are, in effect, three ground floors. One fronts the raised roadway that is coronation Road. The intermediate level is that of Cooperage Lane, and the lowest level is that of the open space to the rear of the site.

The architectural character of the apartment blocks uses a traditional south Bristol palette of brick, stone and render, augmented by the use of raised seam zinc cladding to key elements. All apartments have south or west facing balconies, or small gardens.

The development provides 78 residential units, including a terrace of mews houses fronting Cooperage Lane. The facade to Coronation Road echoes the colours and bay rhythms of the nearby Georgian terraces.

The scheme includes a “local” retail unit (CoOp) along the ground floor frontage to Coronation Road.

The development was constructed over two phases, each being one of the two courtyards.
